8th Grade Math Classroom Connection
- Commitment: Month to month
- Time per session: 1 hour
- Sessions Per Week: 1, 2 or 3 (your choice)
- Class size: Groups of 4 or less
The Cronavirus pandemic ended the school year early before many 8th grade math students fully master the concepts being taught. Unfortunately, it also looks like the virus will disrupt this year’s education.
If the student has unfinished learning from previous grade levels, the chance of becoming frustrated is highly likely. Online learning being made available this year may also not be enough for 8th grade math students to close these gaps..
8th grade math is a spring board into Algebra and high school math. It’s at this turning point when students begin using the skills taught at previous grade levels to make connections in Algebraic concepts.
Calculating Minds provides the math help needed to ensure 8th graders continue on the right path and maintain a love of math. We provide individualized attention and learning paths paced to your student. We use Singapore math methods to help 8th grade math students master a Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) progression.
We’re local Knoxville math teachers who know how to make learning fun and interactive.
What you'll learn
- Define rational and irrational numbers and give examples of each.
- Calculate and approximate principal square roots.
- Identify and conduct transformations (rotation, reflection, translation, and dilation) of a shape or line on the coordinate plane.
- Solve problems with two variables using linear inequalities.
- Apply the properties of exponents to simplify and develop equivalent expressions.
- Perform operations with numbers in scientific notation, including problems with decimal and scientific notation
- Graph proportional relationships, describing the unit rate as slope of the graph.
- Compare two proportional relationships illustrated in different ways.
- Define a function when information is in a graph, a table or an equation
- Compare properties of two functions each represented in a different way
- Determine the rate of change and initial value given information in a variety of ways
- Given the equation y = mx + b, is a linear function, whose graph creates a straight line; determine functions that are non-linear.
- Calculate the volume of a cone, cylinder and sphere
- Determine and analyze the mean, median, mode, and range of data.
Skills needed to master the concepts
- Ability to grasp and apply multi-step problem solving
- Discuss and defend mathematical ideas
- Understand and use graphs, charts, tables and diagrams to solve problems
- Apply and use formulas
- Application of math skills to real world situations
- Ability to design and analyze multiple representations
- Thorough grasp of slope and slope intercept
Beyond our Math Classroom Connection sessions, we also offer 7th grade math students Singapore math. These sessions enable students to get further ahead and excel beyond their grade level.
