Janet Westbrook

Tutor

I spent 32 years as a radiological engineer and health physicist; I was a Registered Professional Engineer and a Certified Health Physicist. My entire career was very math-heavy. After that, I have been tutoring for 17 years. I have tutored all levels of math (including Voodoo Math, aka Statistics). I have also tutored physics, some chemistry, statics, Spanish, French, and even English.  My tutees included middle school, high school, and college students.

Educational Background:
I have a BS in physics; a BA in Math; a BA in Interamerican Studies; an MS in physics; and an MS in nuclear engineering. My undergraduate school was the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California and my graduate school was Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. I also spent an undergraduate semester abroad in Costa Rica at the University of Costa Rica (where I instructed a math course in Spanish!). I have taken various technical postgraduate courses at UT, Pellissippi State, and Roane State.

Favorite part of tutoring:
My favorite part of tutoring is helping students build confidence and see them succeed in subjects they once found challenging.

Fun Fact:
I have played flute in concert bands since about 1993 and I have played in more than 200 concerts over the years. I have been the president of the Greater Knoxville Cactus and Succulent Society for over 20 years and I have a greenhouse with several thousand succulents, more than half of which I sprouted from seed.
